Archival Internship Announcement

                           Summer 2001

                          Stipend $3000

Paul V. Galvin Library of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) announces
an internship opportunity in the University Archives to begin after July
2001.  IIT  is a private, Ph.D.-granting university focusing on
engineering, business, law, architecture, design, and psychology.  IIT is
located in Chicago, on a campus designed by Mies van der Rohe and has some
6,000 FTE students.  The Archives holds the university’s administrative
records and manuscript collections dating back to the 1890s.

Description: The intern will work with the University Archivist and will
be exposed to a variety of routine archival activities such as collection
processing, cataloging, storage requirements, creation of finding aids
(including EAD), assisting patrons.  In addition, the intern will select
one project to pursue in more depth:  records management, work with photo
collections, AV conservation, creation of EAD finding aids, or processing a
major collection.

Qualifications:  The preferred candidate will be enrolled in an Archives,
Public History or related academic program and should be committed to the
archival field as a career choice.  Undergraduate science or history
background is preferred.  Candidates who have previous archival or research
library experience or who have used manuscript collections for personal
research will be considered.  Candidates should be able to lift 40 pounds,
be tolerant of dust and dirt, and expect to do some physical labor.  Basic
computer skills, attention to detail and legible handwriting are required.

Stipend: $3,000 for 10 weeks (36 1/4 hours per week)
The intern is responsible for housing, food, and transportation; on-campus
accommodations may be available.
