Manager, UCSF Archives and Special Collections
University of California, San Francisco

The Library and Center for Knowledge Management seeks applications from
individuals for appointment as Manager, UCSF Archives and Special
Collections. The Manager is responsible for administering all aspects of
the archival program, including a strong focus on digital materials, and
delivering public services for the historical, rare, and East Asian
collections. The Library is responsible for developing and maintaining the
archives for the University of California, San Francisco and is undertaking
major initiatives in tobacco control, biotechnology and Aids. The Library
has been a leader in using digital technology for managing archival
material and is a partner and contributor in the development of the Online
Archive of California, a database that integrates finding aids and images
of primary source material throughout the state. The archival and
manuscript collection contains 2,600 linear feet.  Other special
collections including 15,000 rare books, a 16,000 volume East Asian
collection, pictures, photographs, memorabilia, and artifacts.

The Manager will:

* Serve as a member of the management team with specific responsibilities
in archives managing the acquisition, processing, indexing, cataloging,
preservation and services for the archives and manuscript collections;
* Manage the Tobacco Control Archives project, collaborating with UCSF
faculty, governmental associations, and health organizations to collect and
process papers and records and media using archival standards and
contributing finding aids to the Online Archive of California.  Includes
grant writing to support the project
* Serve as a member of the management team for the development of the
Tobacco Documents Digital Library
* Collaborate with faculty in developing new archival initiatives seeking
sources of external support
* Provide reference service for the historical collections
* Represent UCSF on campus and universitywide committees

A Master's Degree in an appropriate field and formal training in archives.
Knowledge of existing and emergent standards and practices for digital
archives. Demonstrated success in managing projects.  Ability to
communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.  Experience working in a
team setting and in managing staff.  Knowledge of the literature of the
history of health sciences preferred.


This is an academic position in the Librarian series.  Retention and
promotion are predicated on the professional competence and quality of
service within, and professional activity outside the Library; University
and public service; and research and other creative activity, including
teaching and publication.  This position is represented by a bargaining agent.

Appointment to the Librarian series, Associate Librarian/Librarian rank
(salary from $42,780 - $76,476 depending on qualifications).
