Forwarded to STHC-L (The Science, Technology, and Health Care Archives
Forum) from ARCHIVES.
Note the expansion in scope of this set of awards from its previous
incarnation--a change which is evident in how the word "Catalogue" was
dropped from the name "Exhibition Catalogue Awards Committee": There
is now a category for inexpensive informative
leaflets/brochures/broadsides, so that these guides are not forced to
compete with more expensively-produced (and costlier-looking) small
catalogs. And there is now a new category for _online exhibitions_ of
library and archival material, which is going to cause the committee
all kinds of headaches to judge but which will open up an exciting new
avenue of peer-recognition and public relations benefits.

The RBMS Exhibition Awards Committee announces its 2001 Katharine Kyes
Leab & Daniel J. Leab "American Book Prices Current" Exhibition Awards
competition. Sponsored by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of
ACRL/ALA, the competition includes two new categories in addition to
printed exhibition catalogs: electronic exhibitions (also known as
online or virtual exhibitions) and printed exhibition guides. Library
and archival institutions based in the United States and Canada,
including independent and public libraries and archives and those
associated with colleges, universities, historical societies, and
museums, are invited to submit exhibition publications for
consideration in the following categories:
1. Printed exhibition catalogs published between 1 September 1999 and
31 August 2000 that represent an exhibition of library or archival
materials which has taken place or was in process before 31 August
2000. See http://www.rbms.nd.edu/ecac/entryform.html for the entry
form and details.
2. Printed exhibition guides, including leaflets, brochures, and
informative broadsheets that are ordinarily handed out free or for a
maximum price of $1.00 during an exhibition and which serve to orient
the viewer to the exhibition. Eligible guides must have been published
between 1 September 1999 and 31 August 2000 and represent an exhibition
of library or archival materials which has taken place or was in
process before 31 August 2000. See
http://www.rbms.nd.edu/ecac/entryform.html for the entry form and
details.
3. Electronic exhibitions with stable URL addresses, initially released
between 1 September 1998 and 31 August 2000 and featuring library and
archival materials (this first year of the competition will cover a
two-year retrospective period). See
http://www.rbms.nd.edu/ecac/entryform_electronic.html for the entry
form and details.
The announcement of the winning catalogs, guides, and electronic
exhibitions selected from the pool of current Leab Award submissions
will be announced in the spring of 2001, to be followed by the awarding
of certificates to representatives of the winning institutions at the
June 2001 American Library Association Annual Conference in San
Francisco, Calif.
For more information, please see the "Guidelines and Rules for
Submissions" at http://www.rbms.nd.edu/ecac/rules.html. You may also
contact the current chair of the RBMS Exhibition Awards Committee,
Diane Shaw, at the address/phone/e-mail address below, to answer your
questions.
**Please note that the deadline for all submissions is 30 September 2000!**
Thank you for your attention.
