AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH

Records of

MOUNT ZION HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER, San Francisco

1887-1994

156 boxes, 49 oversize boxes, 5 cardfile boxes, 5 oversize folders

Mount Zion Hospital Association was founded in 1887 "for the
purpose of aiding the indigent sick without regard to race or creed, to
be supported by the Jewish community." This collection illustrates how
evolving neighborhood demographics, changes in the Jewish community and
revolutions in health care delivery affected a community-based hospital
over the course of a century.

Besides documenting the development and demise of a Jewish organization
this collection provides insight into changes in hospital
administration, fundraising, volunteerism and philanthropic practices,
the development of psychiatry, research institutes, and other social,
medical and historical topics.

Of special interest are documents about the

Evolution of medical care and hospital organization (including
the advent of HMOs, labor disputes and malpractice liability),

Merger with the University of California, San Francisco,

Nursing School and Women's Auxiliary,

Meditations on the meaning of the specifically Jewish nature of Mount
Zion,

Oral histories with members of the Mount Zion community.

The collection contains minutes, bylaws, correspondence, departmental
records, reports, financial records, publications, photographs, audio
tapes, microfilm, books and memorabilia (including medical instruments,
personal and commemorative items).

The collection is divided into four major series:

Board of Directors

Pamphlets/Public Affairs/Publications/Photos

Programs and Services Administration and Finance

Except for Minutes and Annual Reports which are close to complete, the
majority of the materials consist of scattered files from a variety of
departments, organizations and offices. The bulk of the material covers
the 1960s through the 1980s.
