I suggest as a start that you get in touch with someone at the National 
Museum of American History, Smithsonian, in the History of Medicine 
Division.  You might try Dr. Ramunas Kondrata (kondratas@nmah.si.edu) 
and see what he has to say.  Medical museums and historical medical 
collections have these problems.
