Disposal of Pathology Blocks and Slides

Does anyone have experience with, and/or suggestions regarding how to
properly dispose of pathological specimens - both paraffin blocks and glass
slides? Our records management area is looking into lowering the retention
dates for these items, and is considering the disposal of those  from c. the
mid-1940's through the 1960's.  Can anyone make a case for saving these?
Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
