The Manuscripts and Archives Department of the Yale University Library
invites applications for its 2000 summer internship program.  The program
is designed to provide a graduate student planning a career in the archives
profession an opportunity to obtain practical experience in appraisal,
arrangement, description, preservation, and other aspects of archival work.

Responsibilities: Appraise, arrange, and describe the papers of Kenneth
Donaldson, the focus of a landmark Supreme Court case regarding the rights
of patients in mental hospitals.  Process other manuscript collections and
perform other duties as time permits. Participate in staff and working
group meetings.

Length: 10 weeks @ 37.5 hours/week, during the months May-August.

Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in advanced degree programs in
archival administration, library and information studies, or related
fields.  Archives course work at the advanced degree level. Excellent oral
and written communications skills and ability to work in a team setting.

Preferred: Undergraduate and/or graduate courses in American history and
culture.

Application procedure: Applicants should submit a letter describing their
interest in the archival profession, a resume, a list of courses completed
or underway in the advanced degree program, and the names and contact
information of three references to:
